COMMUNICATIONS AND EVENTS SPECIALIST

Position Summary:            
This is a highly responsible position within the Administration Department focusing on creating, planning and organizing citywide events, assisting with marketing and communications, developing social media and website content, and helping with special projects. Under the supervision of the Communications Coordinator, the Communications and Events Specialist is responsible for special event production, internal and external communications/writing, and assistance with logistical planning and event set-up under very tight deadlines. This position requires an intuitive individual who can think on their feet while working cohesively with others. This individual possesses exceptional project and time management skills for pre-event deadlines and communications, and post-event follow-up, ensuring all stakeholders are working together to deliver a high-quality and well-promoted event. Responsibilities split 50/50 between events/special projects coordinating and communications/marketing/media assistance.  

Required Qualifications:                     
High school graduation or equivalent; bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, event management, business administration, or related field, or training and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in said areas; public contact, administrative, project, and budget management experience; digital media experience; strong organizational and scheduling skills; demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with people of diverse ethnic, economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds; demonstrated experience in being creative and self-directed on deadline while performing collaboratively with a variety of different groups, departments, and agencies; strong research skills; good analytical skills and proven ability to measure program effectiveness and adjust strategies accordingly; excellent verbal and oral communication skills; two years training and/or experience in the operation of a computer using word processing, publishing, and spreadsheet software; ability to lead planning and committee meetings; ability to work flexible work hours that periodically include evenings and weekends; comfort with MS office suite, website content management, survey software, and social media; digital photography experience.

Desired Qualifications:          
Staff or volunteer development experience; proven ability to mediate, direct and enlist others’ cooperation and assistance in high-pressure and unpredictable situations; experience with process development; experience overseeing and training staff and volunteers; knowledge of special event permitting and contracting, and contingency planning; professional experience in communications and marketing; some graphic design know-how and ability to create fliers, posters, and brochures; knowledge of AP writing style and copyediting basics; experience with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and video editing software; strong photography skills.

Salary Range:        $22.44 - $27.91 per hour plus fringe benefits (2020 wage schedule).
