Refuse
The City of Columbia Heights entered into a five-year contract with Waste Management of Minnesota on January 1, 2018 for garbage and recycling. The hauler will pick up residential refuse, provided it is placed in the proper container.

Please call Waste Management at 1-888-960-0008 or contact them via their customer support web page  if you have been missed on the collection route or for other service issues.

Trash Collection
Three container size service levels are offered to residents:

  • 32 Gallon Limited service with Christmas tree and (1) appliance per year
  • 64 Gallon Limited service with Christmas tree and (1) appliance per year
  • 96 Gallon Full service with extra bags, furniture/bedding, Christmas tree and (1) appliance per year
All collections are weekly. Additional material (not to exceed the equivalent of three containers) or large items such as furniture, are included as part of the 96-gallon “Full Service” level.

To ensure timely pickup of bulky items such as furniture and mattresses, please call 1-888-960-0008 to arrange for collection before placing outside.  Items will be picked up within two and a half days of calling.  Items must have come from the property.  Please try to sell or donate items first.

Multi-dwelling properties cannot have additional garbage or rubbish outside of the containers at any time, except for large items such as furniture.

Residents with alleys should place their garbage and recycling carts and any extra items at the alley line for pickup.

Waste Management uses trucks with mechanical arms to collect trash and recycling.  They are using this truck in the alleys as well.  Residents should place carts out where the arm can reach it and allow some space between the carts.  Refuse pads are a convenient way to accomplish this and the City will add these, by request, to the annual concrete work schedule.  Contact Public Works for specifications and pricing.  Call 1-888-960-0008 if there are any items outside of the cart so arrangements can be made to collect those as well.

Garbage and recycling materials should not be brought to the curb until the evening before the scheduled collection day and should be retrieved that same day. Carts need to be set behind the curb, NOT ON THE STREET. Once the trash has been picked up, please remember to remove your refuse and recycling carts from behind the curb and return them to the garage or somewhere out of site from the street.
